Carrera Hybrid classified ad

I stumbled across an ad for a Carrera Hybrid for sale on a Facebook group. When I saw the little sticky note on it, I thought, “That’s a great idea, and it’s the first time I’ve seen it.” So I’m sharing it with you, and I’ll even try to elaborate on it with you.

The seller displays the mileage on each car. What a great idea!

When buying a used car, the first thing you look at is the mileage, and thanks to the Carrera Hybrid app, which calculates the equivalent mileage when you drive the car, this information is readily available.

Simply displaying the car’s information allows you to see its mileage.

You’ll also find the car’s unique identifier (MAC address) and its firmware version number.

Firmware is a permanent computer program embedded directly into the hardware of a device (like a remote control, a hard drive, or a router). It serves as an essential bridge between the physical components (the processor and other parts) and the software we use. Essentially, it’s the basic software that allows the hardware to start up and function correctly.

Why not provide other information during the sale?

What details would be useful to give the buyer to reassure them and justify the price (which may be lower than the new price)? To address these points, I’ll compare our small Carrera Hybrid to a full-size car.

Tires (Grip and Traction)

  • On the Carrera Hybrid: The tires on small RC cars wear down, accumulate dust, and gradually lose their grip. High mileage means the tires are potentially bald or hardened, which degrades the driving experience (uncontrolled skidding, loss of sensor accuracy).
  • Parallel tire wear indicator: Exactly like the wear indicator on real tires. High mileage indicates that tires will need replacing soon.

The Battery / Accumulator (The health of the energy reserve)

  • Regarding the Carrera Hybrid: The cars are equipped with a small LiPo (Lithium-Polymer) battery. These batteries have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles (generally between 300 and 500 cycles). The more kilometers the car has been driven, the more cycles the battery has undergone. A worn-out battery offers less range and a drop in power at the end of its charge.
  • Automotive parallel: This is a direct parallel with the State of Health (SOH) of an electric vehicle (EV) battery. High mileage allows for an assessment of the potential degradation of range.

Electric Motors and Gears (Transmission)

  • On the Carrera Hybrid: The electric micro-motors and gears (often made of plastic or lightweight metal) are subjected to mechanical stress, friction, and heat. Over time, play can develop in the gears, leading to noise or a loss of performance.
  • Automotive parallelism: This equates to wear and tear on the gearbox, differential, and engine. The higher the mileage, the more stress the transmission has endured.

The Chassis, Steering and Optical Sensors (Geometry)

  • On the Carrera Hybrid: The hybrid system relies on optical sensors under the chassis that read the track and on a high-speed micro-servo steering system. Accumulated mileage often results in impacts, off-track excursions, and the accumulation of dust/hair in the steering components.
  • Self-alignment: This refers to the steering components, rack and pinion, ball joints, and shock absorbers.

Two important parameters emerge, mileage and battery age, but we can further expand the interesting information to be communicated to the buyer.

Changing Tires (Road Contact)

  • What needs to be clarified:
    • Indicate the date or frequency of the last tire change, or the type of tire compound installed (original tires, racing/soft compound for increased grip).
    • Indicate whether the tires have been regularly degreased/cleaned with a lint roller or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Car alignment: History of tire and suspension changes.

Maintenance and Cleaning History (The Service)

  • What needs to be clarified:
    • Sensors & Optics: Mention the regular dusting of the optical sensor under the chassis (which reads the track) and the wheel axles (removal of hair and dust).
    • Transmission: Specify whether the gears have been dusted or lightly lubricated.
  • Auto parallel: The maintenance log is up to date (oil change, filter changes, cleaning of parking sensors and ADAS cameras).

Condition of the Bodywork and Chassis (Aesthetic Condition)

  • What needs to be clarified:
    • Report the condition of the mirrors, spoilers, or bumpers (often the first parts to break during off-track excursions).
    • Specify whether the car has been driven exclusively on the official Carrera Hybrid track mat or on other surfaces.
  • Car parallelism: Chassis check and bodywork assessment (absence of accidents, scratches, missing parts).

Firmware Updates (Embedded Systems)

  • What needs to be clarified:
    • Confirm that the vehicle’s firmware has been updated via the application to the latest available stable version.
  • Parallel auto: System updates (OTA) performed at dealerships or remotely on modern vehicles.
